Peter Liang

New York Police officer Peter Liang’s gun accidentally discharged during his patrol, the bullet ricocheted off the wall, and shot an African American young man, Akai Gurley, to death. Mr. Liang was convicted of second-degree manslaughter on Feb. 11, 2016, and could face a sentence of up to 15 years. HCA felt deeply sorry for Mr. Gurley and his family, however, it also believed Mr. Liang was subjected to selective prosecution due to the political environment. HCA volunteers collected 909 petition letters in February 2016 for leniency in Liang’s sentencing.
